Lows have extensive experience in renewable energy. Scotland generally and Orkney specifically are seen as having enormous potential in wind, wave and tidal generation. Orkney is home to the European Marine Energy Centre who are now leading the world in installation and testing of prototype wave and tidal devices in the waters off Orkney. Wind generation, particularly on-shore wind generation, is now seen as an increasingly mature technology and the Scottish Government have indicated commitment to continue to have wind generation at the forefront of ambitious plans for Scotland to move towards generating the bulk of its energy needs from renewable sources.
Lows act for landowners, developers and community based groups looking to exploit renewable opportunities. We have particular experience in lottery-funded community wind turbine projects and act for community groups in Orkney and further afield in helping to deliver community energy projects which will bring tangible benefits to remote and peripheral communities for generations to come.
Lows have extensive experience in land issues relating to renewable development and can advise on land options, leases, outright acquisition and sale/purchase of existing facilities. We also deal with land issues relating to wayleaves and services for construction and decommissioning and for connection to the grid. We are experienced in dealing with the requirements of the major banks willing to fund renewable projects and can assist developer clients in liaising fully with financiers and/or legal agents acting for financiers to ensure that project finance is properly secured and introduced into development projects.
Our accountant Rob Learmonth advises on tax efficient structures available for landowners and developers.
The advice of our estate planning solicitors can be invaluable in ensuring that where agricultural businesses wish to take advantage of opportunities available in renewable generation proper plans are put in place to ensure what are usually long term projects can be secured to benefit not only current business principals but future generations.
At Lows we can provide a comprehensive advice service to businesses seeking to relocate to Orkney or to establish a base including property acquisition and commercial contract matters.
Whilst our expertise in renewable energy is largely shared throughout the practice the renewables team is currently headed up by Catherine Smith and Eoin Thomson, both directors.
