The practice has grown to be one of the largest in the Highlands and Islands. There are six directors and an associate solicitor currently in the firm. Our clients benefit from the unrivalled breadth of local expertise the firm offers. We have well over 100 years worth of collective experience across a wide sweep of legal practice.

DUNCAN HILL
Duncan is the practice chairman and is heavily involved in management and forward planning. Born and raised in Kirkwall he studied Law in Aberdeen before returning home to train with us, qualifying as a solicitor in 1984. He practices primarily in private client work with particular emphasis on trust and executry cases. He is also Lows’ resident in-house I.T expert.
Outwith work his interests include traditional and folk music and he is a long-standing member of the Kirkwall City Pipe Band. He is married to Linda and lives in Kirkwall

ALISTAIR BRUCE
‘Aly’ as he is known to most was born and raised in Perth but with strong family connections to Shetland. After graduating from Dundee University he completed his training in Aberdeen and then joined Lows in 1982. He deals with a varied caseload including property work, family law and commercial work. He is a former Council member of the Law Society of Scotland.
Aly confesses to being a ‘committee anorak’ and is active in politics, amateur dramatics and the local Rotary Club. He is married to Jane, lives in Kirkwall and is a keen golfer.

EUAIN PENNY
Euain is a native of Aberdeenshire but with strong family connections to Orkney. A graduate of Aberdeen University he commenced his traineeship with Lows (then T. P. & J.L. Low) in 1987 and his remained with us ever since. Euain is the designated cashroom partner and his main practice areas are in conveyancing and private client work.
Euain is married to Lorna and lives in Harray where he has been a stalwart of the Parish Cup football side for more years than he can care to remember. He is also a keen golfer.

ROY FLETT
Roy is another Kirkwallian and after graduating from Aberdeen University trained with a large Edinburgh firm. On qualifying he returned to Orkney and joined Lows whilst his father John Flett was the firm’s distinguished senior partner. Roy is primarily involved in private client work with the emphasis on trust and executry work. He is our designated financial services partner.
Roy’s interests include music, astronomy and squash. He is married to Isla and lives in St Ola overlooking Scapa Flow.

EDDIE NICOLSON

Eddie joined the practice in 2002 when Lows merged with the practice of Helen M Nicolson where Eddie had practised as an assistant.
Another Kirkwall native to have studied in Aberdeen he trained with a large Edinburgh commercial firm and then returned to his aunt Miss Nicolson’s practice in 1992. Eddie is involved in a range of private client work including conveyancing and also looks after much of Lows' commercial work, On the court side he is commissioned as a Procurator Fiscal Depute.
Eddie is a keen singer and plays pipes in the Kirkwall City Pipe Band.
He is married to Ann and lives in Kirkwall

DAVID FAIRNIE

David completed his school and university education in Dundee and worked in private practice ‘south’ before moving to Orkney in 1994 to take up a position with Orkney Islands Council, latterly becoming the authority’s Chief Legal Officer. Joining Lows in 2000 he is involved in both litigation and private client work and has a particular interest in adult incapacity and licensing law. He is a registered criminal legal aid practitioner.
Hobbies include rugby, golf and skiing. He lives in Kirkwall and is married to Victoria.

CAROLE MACNAUGHTON

Carole is the firm’s associate specialising in litigation with an emphasis on family law. Prior to joining the firm in 2003 she had gained extensive experience in Glasgow where she had also graduated from the city’s university.

Carole is a registered civil legal aid practitioner and also looks after the firm’s extensive court agency practice.
Outwith work Carole enjoys equestrian pursuits and travel.
She is married to Fraser and lives in Kirkwall.
