Taxation Specialist

Ian has extensive experience advising clients on Tax affairs.

Ian offers quality Tax advice services to businesses and individuals.

He has particular experience dealing with the tax affairs individuals who work offshore.

Ian is a tax specialist, who joined Lows in 2008, having previously worked at senior levels with major firms in the City of London, and who later founded his own specialist tax practice in the City, where he worked with clients who had complex tax affairs for thirty years.  He dealt with Main Board members, on an individual basis, of major UK and International quoted companies for many years. Dealing with booms and slumps in the economy sometimes left high profile City individuals low in income but very high in tax bills and Ian had such a case, dealing with senior levels of the Revenue and the client and his advisers on almost a daily basis for nearly ten years.

Ian’s own practice had a very strong bias towards all the Performing Arts and Media; in particular he had many clients in the world of opera and classical music, together with soap stars and music theatre, and he continues to work in these areas at Lows.  An ability to understand the world of your clients is of course crucial.

Ian also specialised in overseas matters, dealing with Domicile and Residence status matters for many years, in respect of employees of major international companies seconded to the UK.  Many individuals on Orkney work offshore for extended periods and so this expertise is directly relevant to clients of Lows.

Ian has dealt with many Revenue investigation cases, particularly for self employed individuals whose accounts were being reviewed, and where an ability to state your clients’ case, and to be able to negotiate is so important.

Some concerns of a client lead to enquiries with serious outcomes: a great deal of Ian’s expertise was employed on behalf of a client where enquiries lead to an investigation of a client’s adviser; in addition to the many taxation matters arising, he worked alongside leading solicitors and the prosecuting authorities in what became a high profile fraud case.

Our tax practice offers a friendly, confidential and professional service and will deal with one-off matters, preparation of Annual Self Assessment Tax Returns and accounts, Limited Compnay accounts and Corporation Tax Returns,  Vat Returns, all Capital taxes, payroll matters, Estate planning and HMRC investigations.

Outside the office Ian has sung in church and chamber choirs to a reasonably serious amateur standard for most of his life.

Ian is married to Denise and they have two teenage daughters; other animals include a retired horse, two dogs and two cats.
